My respectful regards and sincere greetings to all intellectuals and scholars, especially to those who are concerned with the welfare of the world. I wish to share with you an idea that has been in my mind for a long while: this is that I should publish the insights that have come to me after deep consideration about the state of the world, and thus fulfil my duty by conveying my findings to the citizens of the world. I am happy that this objective is being realized through this book. It is indeed a sense of fulfillment.

Most of the people of the world are caught up in routine family problems, which cause them plenty of suffering. If they only think a while on these problems, they can find solutions. This should enable them to get out of their problems and lead a trouble-free life. However, a lot of people are unable to find time for thinking out solutions to their problems. It therefore becomes the duty of intellectuals who are concerned about the common welfare to take on this work for the sake of all people. They should not only find the answers but also convey them to the people with love and compassion so as to be of real benefit to them. Only such a sense of duty has always prompted me to publish the results of my research. Several learned persons have given the world the results of their findings and thought processes. I appreciate the work of all these intellectuals and bless them. I am also pleased to bless the people at large who read these works and derive benefit from them.

Limitations of Knowledge and the Causes of Illusion

Man's knowledge is severely limited by the capacity of his senses. This limitation has been responsible for the enduring illusion over generations that the real nature of space is plain vacuum, comprised of nothing whatsoever. No individual need be criticized for perpetuating this illusion; nor can the responsibility be cast on the shoulders of thinkers of the past. The five senses of man comprehend very little; there are nearly unlimited functions and results that are entirely outside the scope of his five senses. To understand these, one has to utilize his sixth sense, which has the unique property of inferring the hidden or unknown, and has to further develop this faculty to fathom the secrets of Nature. Just as the stars are always invisible to the blind, and to us during the day, we do not understand the invisible or incomprehensible attributes of Nature because of our limitations. However, we cannot conclude that these attributes do not exist.

Ever since the advent of primordial man, humanity has continued through births of countless generations. The knowledge acquired at a time and place because of a particular need of a given generation may not be obtainable by other people elsewhere. The enlightened people, however, have been able to explain to others the truths that they perceived in their inner vision. Others do not perceive these truths directly, in the same manner, so if they are required to pass on these experiences to others they are able to do so only approximately. In such transmission, it is inevitable that there are additions that are often imaginary. As the transmission continues, the imaginary components are inserted as part of the doctrine. Over time, as the original vision is embroidered imaginatively, more fantasies are added and finally the initial truth is modified substantially. Now, who is to point out this departure from the truth? When the wise people of later ages who realize the truth reveal it, the mind of the public, immersed in habitual beliefs and practices, is not ready to accept their statements. This is how false stories came to be propagated about the principle of divinity. Unless these false concepts are removed there is no scope for humanity to seek and realize the truth.

The present age has seen a tremendous growth in scientific advancement and technology. We have been able to make various timesaving devices for comfort and convenient living. Along with such progress, a multiplicity of deities has also come into being, in place of the one God. But it does not matter; now there is a good way out.

Realization of Truth

Applying the sixth sense for deep thought and by practicing meditation we can obtain the explanation for the real function of the mind, which had so far eluded us. Pain, pleasure, peace and ecstasy are the four significant types of feelings experienced by mankind. Except pain, the other three are acceptable and suitable for life. Pain comes in the way of enjoying life. How is pain generated? The answer to this question begins with the understanding that all actions in the universe take place only by the divine power. The divine power is the fundamental source that becomes any shape and any set of attributes. It is that divine fluid that is the origin of all forces, called the omnipotent Almighty. Just as an inseparable shadow accompanies every object the omniscient consciousness of the Almighty acts as order of function in every form and action appropriately.

All things and all functions of Nature are in order because of this omnipotent force and consciousness. Without understanding this great truth, if one does not act in tune with Nature, that is the point where pain comes into being. The moral principle for the enjoyment of a pure life is the continuous awareness and avoidance of all acts, circumstances and causes that are likely to lead to pain. Man has the capacity to realize this truth of Nature and live accordingly. Realization of any truth which makes life happier is a divine realization.

This knowledge or God realization is the understanding of the Almighty or infinite space, which has transformed as all things throughout the universe, at all times. Pure space is the penetrative fluid that can permeate all things. It pervades and fills the entire universe as infinitesimal energy particles. Neither by senses nor by mind can this fundamental substance be comprehended. Therefore, there is the illusion that this fundamental divine fluid does not exist at all. On the contrary, this divine fluid, pure space, has three potentials :

1. Force

2. Consciousness and

3. Plenum

This divine fluid, the pure space, is the inexhaustible fullness, Plenum. It is the source of all forces in the universe. Hence, it is that we call the omnipotent, the Almighty. This same almighty power is the divine light called consciousness. In waveform, these three potentials (force, consciousness and plenum) are inherent in all the various manifestations of the universe. The subtle energy particles and their groupings are the perceived tangible forms in which the pure space is hidden.

Karma Yoga

The special design of the human body and the potential greatness of man's wisdom both clearly indicate that, in contrast with other living beings, it is eminently suitable for man to practice karma yoga.

The phrase `karma yoga' contains a deep meaning. While karma is action, yoga should be understood as a way of life in which one is linked with the divine state and lives according to Nature's laws. In brief, karma yoga is a way of life in which God realization and the virtuous way of living are combined. Irrespective of one's place of living, karma yoga is the suitable way of life. Karma yoga is the most beneficial way of life for all people of the world.

If one compares the characteristics of the human mind and body with the nature of the divine state, one will most certainly be drawn to the conclusion that karma yoga alone is the proper way of life for humanity, which leads to success along with peace of mind. This way of life includes

l. The culture of every individual, and

2. The collective human culture of the world.

Human life has been in existence since primitive ages. Depending on the place, time and growth of knowledge and also on man's felt needs, actions and concepts have been developing and continuing up to the present. If one looks at human life as it obtains now, one finds many problems due to actions that are unreasonable. As a result one finds heinous crimes and resulting tragedy everywhere. In this world that has evolved from the divine space as its origin, there is absolutely no need at all to continue to experience such misery.

Eminent thinkers should bring clarity and courage in action to the aid of society and apply corrective measures to the extent possible with determination. In this endeavor, the present age with its scientific growth and worldwide educational setup is most suited to such measures. Utilising these good opportunities, mankind has to strive to evolve a new culture and thus experience a peaceful life without pains and miseries. Enabling this is the duty of socially conscious thinkers. There are literally millions of such thinkers who are deeply motivated to act by such thoughts. It is on their behalf and by way of expressing their aspirations that I have taken upon myself the duty of expressing their ideas. With the blessings of all those intellectuals and enlightened thinkers, I take up this work.

If the collective culture of the human race is to be pure, it has to begin from purification of the individual's culture. At the same time the human culture worldwide should be reformed step by step. With these two basic objectives, I have developed plans that are based on the code of Five fold Moral Culture for the individual, and Vethathirian Principles of Life for society as a whole. I call upon every adult capable of focusing on these two plans to take part in the effort and derive benefit. This is required both for the present and the future.

Enlightened readers! My benediction to all of you. My efforts do not stem from egoism; in putting forth my ideas I am mindful only of the highest divine law. I request you and those with whom you associate to confer and examine these ideas from time to time and help in their utilization for the people of the world.

The Five-Fold Moral Culture

1. Each person must live by the earnings made through his or her own mental or physical labor.

2. One's method of living should not cause any suffering to the body or mind of any person.

3. One should not kill any living being for food.

4. One must have the utmost respect for the possessions and freedom of others, and help to protect them.

5. One must cultivate loving kindness and strive to alleviate the miseries of others to the extent possible.

For the miseries of humanity to fade away and humankind to thrive, we now have a code of conduct and the clear intention to follow it. Before explaining in detail, a few more points are to be considered. For a secure base and support of our reformed culture of life, it is essential that we first avoid four self-destructive habits, as given below:

1. Intoxicating drugs are to be totally avoided;

2. Abolition of the murderous tendency to wage war and the atrocities that accompany it;

3. Eschewing lies, that spoil the harmony between body, mind, consciousness and the divinity; and

4. Avoidance of tobacco in any form, as it will prohibit the subtle, divine functioning of the bio-magnetism in the brain cells.

Now I shall go into detail about the Five-Fold Moral Culture.

1. Each person must live by the earnings made through his or her own mental or physical labor.

There should simply not be any question of taking another person's possessions. Everyone has his needs. If he cannot fulfil these by his own earning, it becomes necessary for him to make use of someone else's hard-earned possessions. If this is allowed, eventually human life will start resembling animal life.

Animals do not have the capacity to produce the foodstuff that they need to satisfy hunger. Most of them therefore depend for their food on killing and eating other animals. If mankind does not follow the noble moral culture of living on one's own earnings, our lifestyle will become cruel like that of animals. Just imagine, whenever a carnivorous animal becomes hungry it is obliged to do four deeds, namely

1. Torturing another living being

2. Killing it

3. Violently claiming its body as food and

4. Destroying its freedom to live.

Since these crimes cause pain and suffering to living beings, they are called sinful deeds when committed by a human being.

Every thought and action by a living being gets shrunk and compressed by the Almighty self-compressive surrounding pressure, and stored in the form of waves in its Genetic Center. When circumstances are appropriate, these concentrated waves blossom again into actions and thoughts. This sets the pattern for the four evils mentioned above to form the way of living for animals. These four patterns of action have become the character of the Genetic Center of every carnivorous member of the animal kingdom. As mankind has evolved from animal ancestors, these crimes also characterize the human Genetic Center, which determines the way we lead our lives. This is why the aforesaid four sinful tendencies have become natural to mankind and are continuing through heredity. If you look at the criminal codes and laws all over the world, you will find that the actions identified as crimes throughout history can all be described as one of these four types. To avoid committing these four offences and change his characterized actions and thoughts, man must work hard, using his body and mind, to make his way of life divine.

2. Our method of living should not cause any suffering to the body or mind of any person.

The divine law is such that Nature is never the cause of suffering; only man creates all pains and miseries. Only the injustices perpetrated by mankind are responsible for all the suffering now prevailing in the world. Therefore, if every person decides to abide by this principle of not causing pain to anyone else, would society not live in peace?

3. One should not kill any living being for food.

We have considered this point and its effects already under the First Principle of this Code, above. It is enough if we recall what has been said.

4. One must have the utmost respect for the possessions and freedom of others, and help to protect them.

We do not need a great deal of explanation for this statement. This code of conduct is absolutely essential to remove from the human society the growing tendency of exploiting others in various ways.

5. One must cultivate loving kindness and strive to alleviate the miseries of others to the extent possible.

Society as a whole is able to function only with the labor of all and cooperation and help from everyone. This is essential. This noble way of living will bring happiness to all.

To sum up, I suggest that all adults and thinkers should endeavor to realize the benefits of this Five-Fold Moral Culture and begin to sincerely follow it in life. It will be a good idea for all to take a vow that they will follow this five-fold code of conduct in life. Let the intellectuals assume the duty of spreading the merits of the code among the general public.

Let its implementation be considered a sacred human obligation

Vethathirian Principles of Life

Let us now come to consideration of the culture that is recommended as most appropriate for all people in the world. We have named it "Vethathirian Principles of Life". At various times and places I have expressed in writing my views and conclusion on different subjects. In addition, I have also analyzed and added some thoughts of intellectuals who have given sincere attention to the subject of the welfare of the world. It is the combination of all these that is being offered below as a model culture for the good of the world. Several friends have looked into the merit and depth of this subject and have requested me to designate it the "Vethathirian Principles of Life". In grateful respect for their wishes, I have accepted the title and have given a list of fourteen principles of life for the welfare of humanity together as "Vethathirian Principles of Life".

I request scholars to have a good look at these principles and, if they find that they are good, to present them to the people of the world in suitable ways to shape into a model for world culture. In this model, there are fourteen principles. They are as follows:

World without War

The very idea of war must be utterly eradicated from the world of humanity.

Economic justice

In the economic sphere, justice must be assured.

A Fair Judiciary

An approach entirely in harmony with Nature is required in the realm of Justice.

One World Federal Government

There should be a World Government responsible to the entire world population and in which the people of the world will all be able to participate.

Reformation of Culture

This is the Five-fold Moral Culture I have described above.

Living under the Guidance of Intellectuals

We know how the actions of a few persons are able to spoil the lives of many human beings. With the help of suggestions from thinkers appropriate to the present times, we should be able to remedy the situation. The human race has great variety: there are people of various age groups, from youth to the aged, and of various levels of knowledge, from the illiterate to the highly learned. Each group may possibly think that their actions alone are correct and just, but only the thinkers and intellectuals would be able to ascertain how people's actions may negatively affect the entire community. It follows, therefore, that on behalf of the entire community the laws and conduct codes should be formulated and implemented only by such thinkers.

Respecting Womanhood and Giving Full Equal Rights

It is well known that the contributions of women to society in terms of service and knowledge are essential, valuable and useful. Not realizing the value of such contributions, males have, by their arrogance, often subjected women to degradation, poverty and subjugation. In order to reform this social evil and to bring the merits of womanhood to light so that all will have true respect and regard for women, a suitable code of conduct is necessary.

Living in Tune with the Law of Nature

It is the force and consciousness of the Divine State that has brought forth and is maintaining the universe. Prompted by his ego, man fails to appreciate the power of divinity, and his resultant actions create problems for the human society. It is the duty of intellectuals to prevent this mistake by raising the standard of society. The plan for this, which we call `Living in tune with the Law of Nature' has to be carefully drafted and implemented.

Avoiding unnecessary rituals and festivals

The objective of Vethathirian Principles of Life is the removal of actions leading to suffering and the development of ways and means for peaceful living. Through this plan we must work towards that objective.

Sports to be made non-commercial and only for children

Modern professional sports generate rivalry, jealousy and enmity in varying degrees among individuals and nations these days. Hence, it is proposed that games and sports should be restricted to children for the purpose of promoting the physical and mental health of the youth.

The Educational Curriculum to include Teaching the Law of Cause and Effect

This addition to the educational curriculum should reach students from the primary school level to the university level.

Expounding the Philosophy of Magnetism

In the dynamics of this universe, the tremendous power of magnetism is important both in Nature and by way of its artificial production. Even in these days of great advancements in science, it appears that mankind has not developed a proper appreciation of the value of magnetism. Teaching about the real nature and truth of magnetism should be included in the educational system at all levels.

Food and water to be available for each person of the world

There is no need to emphasize the essentiality of food and water to humanity. These two natural treasures should not become exclusively the property of individuals or groups, but must be available to everyone, just like sunlight and air.

Universal Agreement on One Truth (God) to bring about One World Religion Acceptable by All

There cannot be more than one Divine State. Misrepresentation of this fact has sparked communal hatred and conflicts, leading to wars and mental turmoil throughout the world. There should be no more of this confusion. It is our duty to rectify this situation by means of this fourteenth principle. All religious leaders should be invited to attend a World Meet on Religion. The Meet must declare that there is only one God and take the clear message to the entire world. The leaders must explain to the people that there is only one supreme power that is the origin, sustenance and end of everything. Let these enlightened religious leaders jointly proclaim the world religion, of which there is only one divinity. Let them also explain what exactly that divinity is, in rational terms. Under their leadership a world religion should be established, espousing the realization of one God and universal principles of virtue, under which humanity will live henceforth.

These fourteen "Vethathirian Principles of Life", dealt with elaborately in each chapter, form this book. You will find the explanation of each in the pages that follow. My learned friends are requested to go through them patiently and at leisure and convey the significance of these ideas to the world.

Now I shall proceed to go through the fourteen points that I have proposed for the welfare of the world, which together form the subject of Vethathirian Principles of Life. Let intellectuals and social leaders join and look into them carefully and implement them for the overall well being of society.

From the silent depths of the wise comes enlightenment for the masses: from the depths of Vyasa emerged the pearl we know as Bhagavad Gita; the silent contemplation of Jesus became the Bible; Prophet Mohammed's silence in the month of Ramzan gave us the nectar called Koran; and the revelations that came through silent meditation of Shri Vethathiri Maharishi have brought us the Vethathirian Principles of Life.

The bard said that a "rose by any name would smell as sweet" -its fragrance will invariably exude, whatever it may be named. Similarly, the eternal truths have been expounded through the ages over the earth in the sacred texts of every culture in different terms and metaphors. Although revealed at different ages and times, all are an effort to expound the same fundamental truths and their purpose of improving human society and culture are one and the same. Maharishi, who gave the Five-fold Moral Culture as the code of conduct for the individual, is now giving us the "Vethathirian Principles of Life" for the entire world of humanity through this book. The pages of this book are the basic exposition of these truths. In every line we can see the clarity of Maharishi's thoughts on the divinity, his intuitions about the transformation of that divinity, his intellectual acumen in analyzing the problems of life and above all his compassionate heart yearning for the well being, happiness and prosperity of humanity.

The fourteen principles herein touch on every aspect of human life and explain the need for a re-examination of the many habits we indulge that began at different places and times and arose from different needs. His wise encouragement that we have the maturity to re-examine and change those habits that need to be changed is the unparalleled objective of this book.

This book is the outpouring of compassion of a great man who wants to share his wisdom with the generation of the coming century. In every page of this book, we find a totally different approach to the problems we face and logical solutions to all of them. In due course these would become a part and parcel of our society that will be the golden era of humanity. This book is the seed of the golden era.

Man who is always in search of new and novel techniques to increase his external comforts, does not want to try anything new nor is he receptive to new ideas when it comes to the question of deeper understanding of his internal Self. This lack of receptivity is the cause of all our problems. We are a witness to the sad state of affairs arising out of giving undue importance to the external world and totally ignoring the inner self, our spiritual aspect. To follow the beaten path is easy but dangerous. To change the habit and take up a new path after due consideration and clarifying one's thinking is difficult. But it is that difficult path which can make a man great. The moral of this book, which describes graphically the constant struggle of mankind between his habit and wisdom, is that "the only way to progress is through tempering and discriminating habit and wisdom".

The special feature of this book is that whether it is about sports for children, greatness of women, economic justice, world without war, one world government or understanding of the one divinity, Maharishi discusses the truths threadbare and tells us the things to be changed in each of these fields and also gives us practical methods for such changes. Common men only perpetuate their present way of living. It is only the extraordinary persons who have courage to think of what is to be done and are ready to act accordingly. It is those people who blossom into all-time greats.

In each one of the fourteen subjects taken up in this book we find the uniqueness of Maharishi. When one reads the book, at times the reader may ask himself with apprehension whether it is practical and can it really happen. To raise the reader from these doubts is the objective of this book. "What would happen to my long-held views and habits?" could be the worries of some reader. This book gives the strength for changing one's habits by gaining intellectual clarity on various issues.

It is often said that the culmination of the truths of one century form the foundation truths for the succeeding century. By internalizing the essence of the wisdom of the past and adding to it his own life experiences, Maharishi has laid a firm foundation for the future through this book.

There can be no doubt that this book, written with duty consciousness and a sense of responsibility is not only a good friend for all thinkers, but a book worthy of respect by the entire humanity.

As we knock at the door of a new century, this work, by explaining the highest philosophy and the most cherished goals of life that everyone can easily grasp, has come as a boon for the world. Nowhere else can we find such high philosophy expressed in such simple terms. The Vethathirian Principles of Life is a crystallization of thoughts needed for the coming years. The Vethathirian seeds that are widely strewn in these pages will surely blossom into trees in the minds of the readers. Indeed, that day will surely come when mankind will rejuvenate itself in the shade of these trees. May the Maharishi, who has presented this treatise to the world, live long to enjoy the fruits of his service to the world.
