Purpose of yoga

For the liberation of the soul two things are essential:

(1) Attachment to material enjoyments should be neutralized, and fiill satisfaction (contentment) achieved;

(2) Impressions of sins should be obliterated. In order to achieve these two objectives, soul-consciousness is impenttive.

Yoga provides all the facilities and opportunities for improving esoteric awareness, to achieve satisfaction with worldly enjoyment and to obtain detachment by streamlining the activities of the mind through the process of obliterating the impressions of sins.

The benefit of Yoga does not end with the development of soul-consciousness alone. While we are engaged in cultivating this esoteric awareness, we should not relegate the well-being of the physical body to a secondary place. For maintaining the physical body in a proper state, two conditions have to be fulfilled. They are: (i) Satisfying the needs arising from appetite, changes in atmospheric conditions and excretory forees of the body; and (2) Guarding against the malfunctioning of the human system, the enmity of other living beings, and natural disasters.

For the fulfilment of these conditions, one has to understand the laws of Nature, the pattern of the society in which one lives and the sentiments of the individuals constituting the society. Yoga will help man to perform all of his duties in harmony with the laws of Nature and the sentiments and conventions of society. It will enable him to lead a successful life, and achieve satisfaction and peace by sharpening the intellect, cultivating constant awareness, somethin the will, streamlining the mind, and basing the behaviour on moral values.

Since the functions of the mind and the body are interdependent, it is imperative that equal auention be paid to both the spiritual and material aspects of man. Yoga provides all the benefits in both fields. Therefore, Yoga is a well-balanced and perfect process for success and peace in life.
